Simone Browne, Ph.D.

Associate Professor, University of Texas at Austin

Simone Browne is an associate professor in the Department of African and African Diaspora Studies, and Director of the Center for Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. She is currently writing her second book, which examines the interventions made by artists whose works grapple with the surveillance of Black life. As a Data Ecologies Fellow, Simone will continue with two projects. “Waste, Reef and Ash” asks what labor extraction, data extraction and the extraction of other planetary resources sounds like in Accra, off the coast of Tobago, and on La Soufriere volcano in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. “Algorithmic Landscapes and the Post-Plantation” maps certain Amazon fulfillment centers, and question whether these just-in-time distribution centers are often located in low-income communities, and if there is a disconnect regarding toxic exposure to be found between these communities and the ones with higher rates of online shopping and Ring doorbell and Neighbors app usage.
